Czechs are beer drinkers, but that doesn\’t mean they don\’t like wine. But how and on what basis should you choose? Wine stores are everywhere in the Czech Republic, and supermarkets carry a wide variety of wines. What should you look out for and what should you avoid? Let\’s take a closer look at how to buy wine.
Always look at the label
Every bottle usually has the vintage on it. Why is that? Of course it matters. Even if you buy the same varietal wine from the same producer, it will taste completely different from 2015 to 2016.
Quality wine is not just about the color of the label. But not everyone prefers white or red wines, because many people opt for a compromise, i.e., rosé. But what do we know about what is written on the bottle? For example, is it a varietal wine, is there an appellation, is it a grape selection, where does it come from, has it won any awards, etc.? These details will give an indication of the quality of the wine.
The Czech flag on the cap guarantees that the wine was grown, harvested, and produced in our country. Otherwise, the origin is indicated on the label. Czech wineries are not fooled, as they also import foreign grapes to make their wines. But it is no longer pure Czech. Because the grapes are sweeter in southern countries, labels often list the country of origin as Hungary, Italy, Spain, or Slovakia. This does not mean that the wines are undesirable, but they are no longer pure Czech wines, nor are they well-known wines.

Czech wines from Czech winemakers that also indicate their quality, preferably vineyard, are a guarantee of quality. It is also worth choosing according to the sugar content of the wine. If you do not want to make a mistake, it is best to visit the winemaker directly. That way you will know what you are buying and you will like the bottle you choose. Also, you will get a lower price than you would at a wine store or other store.
