New Stage V emission regulations are here
“Stage” refers to the European emission regulation for new diesel-powered machinery and vehicles intended for off-road use. Until now, this has corresponded to the U.S. “Tier” (the highest so far is “Tier 4B / Stage IV“). The U.S. has not yet taken this step, leaving “Tier IV Final“.
What and when?
The new emission regulations will begin in2019forstandard engines below 56 kW and above 130 kWand in2020for56-130 kW. Thus, the new regulations will cover a wide range of machinery, from conventional construction and transport machinery to industrial machinery, agricultural machinery, and other so-called mobile machinery with constant running speed (including, for example, various generators mounted on trailers)
. New limits for particulate matter in exhaust gases for all engine outputs will also be introduced. Because of the large number of outputs that will comply with the new standards, there is no clear exhaust treatment technology. It all depends on the priorities of individual manufacturers, machines, and customers. What is important is not the method, but the result: meeting the standard.
In addition to the mandatedDPF(Diesel Particulate Filter), i.e. diesel particulate filters, the following exhaust treatment technologies may be encountered:
- SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) – selective catalytic reduction performed by injecting synthetic urea (AdBlue);
- DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) Diesel Emission Catalyst;
- ComplementaryCombination of DPF, SCR and DOC.
The various components and fixtures that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer for new diesel engines are no exception.
