Herb Garden in the Kitchen
The trend of using fresh herbs in Czech kitchens is slowly returning. This is understandable, because herbs contain the healthiest substances. It is a housewife\’s dream to have fresh herbs available all year round. Ideally, they should be close at hand so that one does not have to take a break from cooking. A small pot with a diameter of 12 cm per plant is all that is needed. Some people resort to pots that can hold several at once. But I bet they all have space issues. We need so many things in our kitchens, how do we solve this?
Many cooks and chefs keep their pots on the windowsill. However, that is not an ideal choice. Opening a window is not comfortable, especially in winter. Also, they can get burnt by the harsh sunlight. Therefore, look for another location where there is plenty of light, but with minimal negative impact.
Hanging several rows of them stacked on the wall will transform them into not just a useful item, but a cozy and proud display shelf in the kitchen. All you need is three identical shelves, spaced well apart from each other. Plant some plants in elegant pots and you\’re done.
Of course, it\’s not that easy. First, one must carefully consider whether to buy pre-grown herbs or seedlings. If you choose the first option, never buy them from a supermarket. These herbs are pre-grown for immediate consumption and will never be successfully cultivated. Even with meticulous and loving care, they will soon be gone. Instead, rely on a proven gardener.
Growing from seed is arguably the best option. You may have to wait longer for the harvest, but it is absolutely worth it.
In addition to using the herb garden for cooking, it can also be used as a home pharmacy. Syrups and teas are becoming increasingly popular. Nothing works better for coughs than thyme syrup or basil tea, both of which help with the clearing of phlegm.
