Breaking up with a mate – the amazing changes that happen to your body
Every emotion we experience leaves a mark on our bodies. Some are immediately visible, while others become apparent over time. One experience that affects us greatly is a breakup. Breakups are a great stress for us and have a very negative impact on our bodies.
– Our resistance to pain becomes weaker
When we are in love, our body increases levels of dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin. When these levels decrease due to negative emotions from a breakup, oxytocin levels decrease, resulting in a weaker resistance to pain.
– Losing one\’s identity
As strange as it sounds, this is true. Those who are alone must find themselves in a new situation again. What was once “you” must now change to “I”. Scientists have taken up this theme and studied the facial muscles of people who have broken off relationships. Using a device that measured the electrical activity of the smallest muscles, such as the facial muscles around the eyes and eyebrows, they found that when subjects thought about their former partners, their activity increased. In other words, our faces express sadness even after such an experience.
– Weight changes
Some people notice that their weight changes after a breakup. Sometimes they lose weight, sometimes they gain weight. When “stress eating” is done, dopamine is released into the body, improving feelings of well-being. On the other hand, suppressing appetite decreases dopamine. After a breakup, the opposite reaction occurs: loss of appetite, lack of energy, lack of strength, and lack of desire to get out of bed. Illness-like symptoms appear and weight loss occurs.
– Inability to sleep
The breakup often results in insomnia. Day and night, all they can think about is their ex-lover. This makes it difficult to sleep.
– Depression
Relationship breakups are accompanied by long-term sadness, which is the first step toward depression. Be alert and if you notice a prolonged bad mood, help yourself and don\’t be afraid to seek professional help.
